Mayfield West’s culture and dance journey

Students from Mayfield West have been exploring different aspects of their Aboriginal culture throughout the year.

They have been busy setting their own learning goals, and learning the elements of conflict resolution. The students voted to learn traditional Aboriginal dance and, with the help of Aunty Emily Punu, have explored four different dances: a cleansing dance, the Honey Tree dance, the Creation dance and an animal dance.

Students then learned how to prepare and use natural ochre with a grinding stone. At the end of the year, our Aboriginal students performed a cleansing dance and the Honey Tree dance to open the school’s presentation day ceremonies.
