Merewether Public School celebrates NAIDOC Week 2016

The theme for the 2016 NAIDOC Week was Songlines — the Living Narrative of Our Nation. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Merewether Public School students participated in cultural art, dances, sports and cultural studies.

Students from Merewether Public School celebrated Aboriginal culture during our 2016 NAIDOC Week by opening the week with a smoking ceremony, traditional dance and didge. The students rotated through a variety of cultural activities that were lead by our fabulous local Aboriginal community. We made Johnny cakes, created bush tucker menus, completed some weaving, and students made their fantastic cultural poles that represent our Aboriginal students’ identity and heritage.
